Culver City Review of Public Safety Services

On May 25, 2020, Americans across the country witnessed the killing of George Floyd in police custody via social and televised media. Outrage regarding the circumstances of his death led to mass protests and government action to examine public safety services. In response to numerous community requests, the City Council of Culver City held a Special Meeting on June 15, 2020 focused on hearing public comments about the Culver City Police Department’s policies and budget. The City Council authorized the City Manager’s Office to initiate a Review of Public Safety Services to 1) review and reallocate safety resources, services, and budgets and 2) review the Police Department’s use of force policy.

The General Plan Update project team is supporting with this effort to:

  • Ensure community priorities heard through the Review of Public Safety Services shape the vision, guiding principles, and policies of the General Plan;

  • Broaden how the General Plan addresses public safety concerns of all who live, work, and play in Culver City; and

  • Support with identification of issues and opportunities that may lie outside of the scope of public safety agencies and departments and be addressed through other elements of the General Plan, such as Housing, Transportation, Infrastructure, Economic Development, and more.

In addition to City’s Review of Public Safety Services, the General Plan Update now also includes a Technical Advisory Committee on Public Safety, which will provide opportunities for technical experts to further recommend policies or programs for consideration in the General Plan.

Community Survey on Public Safety and Law Enforcement in Culver City

A community survey to review public safety services in Culver City was made available through this website, in English and Spanish, and was promoted through several of the City’s social media channels. The survey closed on September 15, 2020 and preliminary results were presented at the September 17, 2020 Special Meeting of the GPAC. Final results will be made available via a report prepared for the Culver City City Council Meeting on October 12, 2020.

Policing and Public Safety Technical Advisory Committee

Following the survey and Public Safety Review, the General Plan Update will continue engaging with efforts to reimagine public safety through the Policing and Public Safety Technical Advisory Committee (TAC). This TAC is one of six advisory bodies formed to address topics of importance to the General Plan Update.
